2015The Benton Harbor-St. Joseph YMCA was looking to renovate their space based on a conceptual master plan developed with the national YMCA. The plan called for “new” and “innovative” spaces that promote interaction, while also maintaining the YMCA’s welcoming character and mission of service. Progressive AE engaged YMCA leadership and key stakeholders in a visioning and design process to develop a plan for the renovation and meet the needs and goals of the organization.
Objective
Make wayfinding easier and reduce congestion
Open up lobby and create more gathering spaces
Create distinct and special places for children
Maintain use of facility throughout construction process
Outcome
Additional windows allowed for more natural light and outside views to help with wayfinding
Additional space for children’s activities that were central, easily visible and safe
A larger and more open lobby space helps promote interaction and gathering
Dedicated fitness studios for additional classes
Family changing rooms and locker rooms designed for people with special needs
