Creston Neighborhood Association – Corridor Initiative

Project Details

Creston Neighborhood Association

Grand Rapids, MI

10 block neighborhood corridor

Hired by the Creston Neighborhood Association to provide design and master planning services for the mile long corridor along Plainfield Avenue, from Leonard Street to Dean Street. A neighborhood design charrette was held to encourage neighborhood residents and business owners to provide feedback about what they would like to see in the future of the Creston neighborhood. Design Plus combined that information with data collected about the neighborhood to develop graphics for the final Master Plan report. Gateways at either end of the corridor, along with the core of the business district at Plainfield and Coit, were identified for initial investments, with suggested improvements including pocket parks, trees, signage, stationary artwork, decorative lampposts, new pedestrian crossings, traffic calming elements, as well as a proposal to close Coit between Quimby and Plainfield to create a pedestrian plaza.

To provide a vision for revitalization for a key neighborhood business district in Grand Rapids, MI.

The master plan was created through a series of visioning sessions with neighbor merchants, customers, and residents. The plan provides a road map for the Creston Corridor revitalization through recommendations regarding new public spaces, streetscapes, architectural infill and new business opportunities.
