Goguac Lake is a relatively large and deep lake located entirely within the City of Battle Creek. Most of the shoreline is developed and public access to the lake is available through an MDNR boat launch.  In accordance with Michigan’s Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, the City of Battle Creek established a lake improvement board for Goguac Lake. The lake board initiated a multi-faceted program to protect the quality of Goguac Lake. Progressive AE was retained to assist the lake board with the implementation of the project. The program included a recreational carrying capacity study; ongoing information and education; water quality monitoring; and invasive aquatic plant control.

Objective

To control the spread of invasive exotic plants and to establish a baseline from which to gauge long-term changes in water quality.

Outcome

Ongoing plant control activities have prevented exotic and invasive species from spreading in Goguac Lake, and long-term monitoring has shown improvement in the overall water quality.
