2020Ender Hall highlights the DeVos Campus of the Grand Rapids Community College. This historic structure built at the turn of the century by a Grand Rapids lumber baron for his family is currently being transformed into a student-focused, resource filled hub for GRCC. The original structure had seen a variety of tenants and uses over its life which has left the original integrity of the home difficult to see. Progressive AE has worked to uncover the historic attributes of this majestic home and carefully integrating new programs to create a place for students to gain access to needed resources for technology, skills development, mentorship, student success, on campus employment with career planning and recruiting, at this location.
Progressive AE engaged with Grand Rapids Community College, the local building officials, and the Historic Preservation Commission as this project included a full renovation of the main, second, and third floors of the House as well as sensitive repairs to its exterior. The careful inclusion of an elevator central to the floor plan and a new external accessibility ramp provide the facility barrier free accessibility. The project has achieved LEED Gold Certification for Commercial Interiors. The project won Outstanding Design for a Historic Preservation and was featured in the 2021 Architectural Portfolio from American School & University.
