Gun Lake is a popular vacation and resort area located between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. The lake provides fishing, boating, skiing, and other recreational opportunities to lake residents and the public through both state and county boat launch facilities. Due to concerns about an increase in plant growth in the lake, the Gun Lake improvement Board was established to identify a long-term management plan for the lake. Progressive AE was retained to develop and help implement the plan. Since the onset of the project, a recreational carrying capacity study was completed and an invasive aquatic plant control program was implemented. Water quality and aquatic plants are monitored annually in the lake and watershed improvements have been constructed to minimize pollution inputs to the lake. In 2015, a Michigan Invasive Species Program grant was awarded and studies of the lake are underway to evaluate the efficacy of both traditional and innovative plant control methods.

Objective

To control the spread of invasive aquatic plants and protect water quality.

Outcome

Plant control has been successful in the lake and watershed management is helping to reduce pollution inputs to the lake.
