About the project/client:

The City of Grand Rapids engaged local professionals Progressive AE and Fishbeck as consulting engineers to complete a design for the City of Grand Rapids’ Engineering Department. The project’s purpose was to move a mainline sewer from its current location, bisecting properties that front the Grand River from Fulton Street to Wealthy Street, into the Market Street Right-of-Way (ROW).

Objectives

  • To allow future redevelopment of the currently burdened parcels, unburdening the river-front properties, and will put the sewer in the city-owned ROW.

Outcomes

  • Constructed 3,016 feet of new 96-inch diameter sanitary sewer at a depth of 24-feet below the road grade.
  • Rerouted to connect the east/west portions to the existing East Side Trunk sewer.
  • Complete replacement of the Market Avenue roadway and sidewalks. The roadway was reconfigured from a 4-lane road (2 lanes each way) to a 3-lane road (1 lane in each direction with a center turn lane) where possible.
  • Replacement of the storm sewer, portions of the 8-inch, 12-inch, and 24-inch watermain, and much of the city conduits were also completed as part of this project.
  • construction of a sanitary sewer junction chamber (20’ x 20’) to tie an existing trunk main in Fulton Street to the east into the newly relocated East Side Trunk Sewer.
