Worked in conjunction with American Village Builders as a design/build team to create the new student housing project on the campus of Western Michigan University. The project consisted of four, three-story buildings in a mix of one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom units totaling 330 beds. The project also included parking for approximately 300 cars. The buildings are of stick-built construction, three stories in height with synthetic slate roofs and masonry exterior. Our services included architecture, structural engineering coordination, interior design, mechanical/electrical engineering, and construction administration.

Objective

Western Michigan University had not built any student housing in the last 40 years. There was a definite need to build apartment style housing in order to compete with the off campus competition.

Outcome

The resulting four building student housing complex was built to private developer standards with as many Western Michigan University institutional requirements to create a rent structure that competed with the offices campus completion, including a 50 year exterior.
