Welcome to the Team! Cheryl Walker Joins as Learning and Community Practice Leader
We are excited to announce the appointment of industry expert, Cheryl Walker, FAIA, as a dedicated practice leader in the learning and civic markets. Walker will lead Progressive AE’s commitment to serving client needs, while also attracting new clients in the marketplace. She has more than 25 years’ experience and is credited with numerous award-winning projects.
In 2016, Charlotte-based ai Design Group merged with Progressive AE to create a stronger, more diverse full-service firm. The expanded team and additional expertise have allowed the firm to diversify into new markets. The addition of Walker furthers Progressive AE’s commitment to learning and civic clients in and around Charlotte.
“We are making a significant investment to bolster our regional expertise, experience-base and portfolio in the learning and civic markets, which means hiring the best and brightest,” said Wes Jones, managing principal. “We are excited about introducing our expertise in higher education to the local market and growing our local civic project experience – and Cheryl is just the person to lead these initiatives. She is a well-known expert whose knowledge and expertise are a value to not only Progressive AE, but most importantly, a value to our clients.”
Walker comes to Progressive AE from Bergmann Associates, formerly Gantt Huberman Architects, a national design and consulting firm where she was a principal tasked with leading the firm’s education practice as well as sustainability efforts for civic and higher education projects. Several notable projects include ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center; CPCC’s Harris Conference Center, Health Careers Center and North Classroom Building; UNC-Greensboro Moran Commons Dining Hall; UNC-Greensboro Memorial Auditorium renovation; Johnson C. Smith University Biddle Memorial Hall renovation; UNC-Ashville Overlook Hall; and Mecklenburg County Behavioral Health Center.
“Joining Progressive AE in the role of practice leader is an exciting opportunity and challenge,” said Walker. “The firm is well-known in Michigan for their expertise and experience with higher education and civic projects I look forward to bringing together that wealth of knowledge and the strong Charlotte region relationships to grow our team of experts locally.
Walker possesses a Master of Architecture from North Carolina State University College of Design. Over the past two decades she has served numerous professional and community organizations including the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), American Institute of Architects (AIA), National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), and the North Carolina Board of Architecture. She has received multiple professional and community awards including the NCARB Presidential Medal for Distinguished Service, the AIA North Carolina William H. Deitrick Service Medal, and the McColl Center for Art + Innovation Luminary Award. In 2009, Walker was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows, the highest honor bestowed on a member.
As one of the firm’s core values, Progressive AE is committed to learning and approaching all matters with eager curiosity and self-driven pursuit of personal and professional development.
